The number of television releases on DVD is huge and continues to grow on a weekly basis . . . just check out the web site TVShowsOnDVD.com. Many of these shows, however, are of the more recent variety and large numbers of classic shows from the 1950s and 1960s are getting overlooked. Fortunately, for fans of classic TV, a number of episodes from shows of television’s early days have fallen into the public domain and now, thanks to the low manufacturing costs of DVDs, shows that have been long unseen can be had for next to nothing.

Over the last two months, the Dollar Tree chain of dollar stores has begun to carry different lines of DVDs with public domain movies, television programs and cartoons for, you guessed it, $1.00. The DVDs are packaged in a cardboard folder or envelope, rather than the customary plastic case. In this post, I’ll list the offerings of three different companies specializing in these low budget offerings. Please note that the list for each company may be incomplete as the lists are based on what I have actually seen in the stores.

Dollar DVD

This company appears to be an offshoot of Brentwood Communications, a California company specializing in public domain releases . . . the Brentwood logo appears at the start-up of each disc and the DVD cover art is the same as many of Brentwood’s releases. Most of their releases, to date, have been from 1960s television series, but they have also released some made-for-TV films as well. Unfortunately, their offerings appear to have sold out at Dollar Tree and, as yet, have not been restocked but, nevertheless, here’s what I found:

Petticoat Junction – 4 episodes
Dick Van Dyke Show – 4 episodes
Andy Griffith Show – 4 episodes
Bonanza – 2 episodes
Red Skelton – 3 episodes
Rescue from Gilligan’s Island – TV reunion movie
Beverly Hillbillies – 5 episodes

Television Classics

Television Classics of Solana Beach, CA has the largest number of TV releases for $1.00 and, in my opinion, the best offerings. If you’re interested in television programming from the medium’s first decade, Television Classics has a great sampling, including a few rarities like the live Sci-Fi anthology series “Tales of Tomorrow.” Each disc is packaged in a cardboard envelope and they have generally been well stocked at Dollar Tree (currently they are in their second wave of releases so some of the first wave of releases may be out of stock for the time being). Here’s the list of offerings:

Treasure Box Collection

So far, this company has only a few TV releases and would be a better choice for those of you interested in public domain cartoons of Superman, Casper, Mighty Mouse, Betty Boop, Popeye, and Woody Woodpecker, among others. But they do have a few TV releases that are listed below:

Since these discs are just a dollar, you should be aware of a few caveats:

Audio/visual quality

Anyone who expects modern-day “high definition” quality of these discs will be greatly disappointed. As is the case with the vast majority of public domain material, the releasing companies don’t have access to the original negatives. In almost all instances, 16 millimeter syndication prints (or video masters thereof) are used as the source. For most of these releases, you are definitely going to find specks and scratches on the video portion and sometimes scratchy sounding or noticeable hiss on the audio portions. However, all of these episodes are very watchable and, given the low price, are a bargain.

Theme Music

For a number of the shows from the 1960s such as The Beverly Hillbillies, The Andy Griffith Show, Bonanza and Petticoat Junction, the original opening and closing theme music may be replaced. That’s because the music for these shows is still under copyright. You may find that some of these discs have retained the original music; presumably, the appropriate royalties are being paid for their use.

Availability

I’ve only seen these discs available at the Dollar Tree chain. Based on repeated visits, these discs sell like hotcakes. Often times, they will appear near the checkout, making browsing somewhat difficult. I haven’t seen them at any other dollar stores, but based on how well these have sold at Dollar Tree, I think that it’s only a matter of time before these discs begin to appear at other dollar stores.

Unfortunately, Treasure Box Collection does not list episode titles on its cover folder so there's bound to be some episode overlap with other public domain disks, especially for a show like Burns & Allen that has just a few episodes in the public domain. Still, at a just a dollar a pop, it's a fairly low-risk gamble.

I've seen most of the public domain DVD collections of Robin Hood episodes and, frankly, none of them look great though the 3-episode collection from Television Classics is among the better offerings. There's a bad jump cut in episode 1 at about the 7 min, 45 sec. mark that loses about a minute and a half plus of footage. The other two episodes are complete. What I like about this DVD is that it includes the very first 3 episodes of the series. You might also be interested in a new 2-disc, 12-episode release of Robin Hood episodes from Platinum Disc Corporation. I picked it up for $5.99 at Best Buy just last week. Visual quality is variable for the episodes.

With respect to the Dick Tracy episodes, it looks like the opening titles have been spliced in for all three episodes . . . they all have a purplish tint. The first two episodes are OK, but the third episode is not in great shape . . . has a yellowish/brown tint to it. And none of the Dick Tracy episodes have the closing credits. Still, this series is a tough find on DVD, so I appreciate the fact that a few episodes have been released.

I won't comment on your movie purchases . . . that's probably a subject for the movie forum.

A few more TV releases from The Treasure Box Collection were spotted: The Andy Griffith Show and Bonanza. Both of these shows have had numerous releases of public domain episodes in the past, so the likelihood of getting duplicated episodes is high especially for The Andy Griffith Show, which has just 16 episodes in the public domain.

The Over-the-Hill Gang - Walter Brennan

"Escape from Sobibor" is a serious film that was made in Europe about the escape of Jewish prisoners from a concentration camp during World War II, and Treasure Box has secured a relatively good looking (and defect-free) transfer. "Guilty Conscience" is a very soft and, at times, blurry looking print. That's a shame because it's pretty well written and acted. I have yet to see Treasure Box's print of "The Over-the-Hill Gang," which is one of a number of Aaron Spelling produced TV movies to have fallen into the public domain.

A new public domain releasing company, Digiview Productions, has begun to introduce a series of movie, television, and cartoon DVDs for a dollar at many Walmart locations. I have seen some of the movie titles at Walmart, but none of the television or cartoon releases yet. I've purchased a few of the dollar DVDs at Walmart (from Digiview Productions) and have found a few instances where music has been replaced. Surprisingly, the familiar "dum de dum dum" theme from "Dragnet" has been replaced. There have been numerous releases of the 1950s "Dragnet" episodes that have fallen into the public domain, but this is the first time that I've heard the music replaced. The theme music for "Long John Silver" has also been replaced and end credits have been removed. Only on "The Adventures of Robin Hood" disc are the episodes and theme music complete, though the end credits for one of the episodes are incorrect, i.e., they were lifted from a different episode. Visual quality of the discs that I've sampled so far is OK for series that were broadcast in the 1950s.

I picked up a few more of the dollar DVDs at Walmart that are issued by Digiview Productions: The Burns & Allen Show, The Lone Ranger, and Sherlock Holmes.

The Burns & Allen episode transfers are OK, certainly worth it for a dollar, but the transfers from Television Classics are better. Still, if you're having a hard time finding the DVDs from Television Classics (at Dollar Tree), the Digiview DVD is fine.

The Lone Ranger DVD is a pleasant surprise. All of the episodes are of near broadcast quality and one of the episodes is in COLOR, from the series' final season. Outside of the two Lone Ranger theatrical movies released with Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels, this is a rare opportunity to see the show in color. The color is a little faded, but generally it's very watchable. Unfortunately, one of the black & white episodes included here is the middle episode from the three-part story "arc" that introduces the Lone Ranger, so it's a bit out of place here without the other two episodes, but the visual quality is excellent, particularly as it was broadcast in 1949! If you want a sampling of Lone Ranger episodes, this is a good bet.

The Sherlock Holmes DVD is a letdown. The transfers are, arguably, the worst that I've seen for this series and the theme music has been replaced. Like Dragnet, there have been a number of DVD releases for episodes of this series, but this is the first time that I've heard the theme music replaced. The Television Classics DVD of Sherlock Holmes episodes is far superior to Digiview's release.

A new batch of TV DVDs at Dollar Tree

A new batch of DVDs from Television Classics has arrived at Dollar
Tree; here are some of the titles that were included:

The Third Man (TV series) - This is the rarity in the group and Jonathan Harris
fans will not want to miss this as this is BEFORE he was in The Bill Dana Show
and Lost in Space.

Flash Gordon - Unfortunately, this disc includes the episode "Deadline at
Noon" which is replicated on the Treasure Box Collection disc. The other two
episodes are not duplicated.

Westerns, Vol. 3 - One episode each of Bat Masterson, Annie Oakley, and the
Cisco Kid.

Westerns, Vol. 4 - One episode each of Death Valley Days (with Stanley Andrews
as the "Old Ranger"), Fury (Peter Graves), and Jim Bowie (episode is duplicated on the first JB volume released earlier).

Jack Benny, Vol. 3 - Guests include Dorothy Shay, Humphrey Bogart and Jayne
Mansfield.

Make Room for Daddy, Vol. 2 - 3 eps.

Ozzie & Harriet, Vol. 3 - 3 eps; includes some original commercials.

Detectives, Vol. 4 - one episode each of Dick Tracy (episode NOT duplicated on
the Treasure Box Collection DVD and includes full closing credits), Mark Saber, and Treasury Men in Action. Some real oldies here and rare too!

Topper - with Leo G. Carroll, 3 eps.

Sergeant Preston of the Yukon, Vol. 2 - 3 more color episodes (color is badly faded and one episode, for all practical purposes, is in B&W).

The Lone Ranger, Vol. 3 - three episodes that were originally broadcast in the
Fall of 1949!

I saw a few more of the "usual suspects" like The Lucy Show, The Andy
Griffith Show, and Bonanza . . . and they had a few from last Spring's batch,
including the Colgate Comedy Hour shows with Martin & Lewis and Abbott &
Costello.

Digiview's Made-for-TV Movies

Digiview Productions' DVDs that are available at Wal-mart yielded a few made-for-television movie finds:

Death Sentence - early Nick Nolte supporting role before he made his name in feature films.

The Boy in the Plastic Bubble - a John Travolta starring vehicle before he made his name in feature films.

Murder on Flight 502 - Digiview's cover art and main menu screen give the killer's identity away, but look at the cast: Farrah Fawcett (when she was Fawcett-Majors), Robert Stack, Theodore Bikel, Walter Pidgeon, Brooke Adams, Sonny Bono, Hugh O'Brian, Polly Bergen, and Danny Bonaduce, among others.

It's possible that there may have been others, but these are the only ones that I saw.
